Success For All identifies the essential areas of reading instruction based on its own research in reading and the research findings and recommendations suggested by the National Reading Panel in its report published in September 2001.
The National Reading Panel's report "Teaching Children to Read: An Evidence-Based Assessmet of the Scientific Research Literature on Reading and Its Implications for Reading Instruction", pinpoints phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension as the essential areas of reading instruction. These areas form the basic goals of the Success For All reading program.
Clyde Intermediate has adopted the Success For All reading program for its Elementary and Intermediate campuses. In this program students are grouped according to reading ability. This allows the reading teacher to meet the specific needs of their reading group. Students are retested each nine weeks to ensure they are properly placed. Student groupings will change as students succeed to a higher level of reading ability.
Students are taught reading during a 90 minute block in which the entire school is involved in teaching reading. During this ninety minute block the students are instructed on vocabulary, reading strategies, phonics, oral language skills, cooperative learning and writing.
Students are expected to read with someone at home each night for 20 minutes. This is referred to as "Read and Respond." This is the only homework required by the Success For All program, but it is a vital component. Students who practice reading outside the school day are more successful than those who do not practice their reading skill.
